Members of the Word makes Bible Studies for Women, one of the apps in this guide. We checked every other app's price and features on its App Store listing, Google Play listing or official site on September 29, 2026. Prices are in US dollars and can vary by country.
The page that ranks first for "best Bible apps" was written in 2012, and most newer lists come from app makers who rank their own product first. Neither tells you what an app costs today, whether it shows ads, or where your notes go.
We make one of these apps too, and we explain below exactly why it sits first. Every other pick is placed by what it does best, and we say plainly where a free app beats ours.
We checked each app on the App Store, Google Play and its developer's site on September 29, 2026. The table compares what decides most choices: translations, price and ads, offline reading, and where your notes are stored.

Free vs paid Bible apps: what you pay for
Reading the Bible in an app can cost nothing. What you pay for is what sits around the text: study Bibles, narration, an ad-free screen or guided explanation.
- Free, no ads: YouVersion, Blue Letter Bible, Hosanna and The Bible with Nicky and Pippa.
- Free app, paid resources: Olive Tree, Logos, ESV Bible and NIV Bible, where study Bibles and commentaries cost extra.
- Free with ads: Bible Gateway, and Logos on Android. Life Bible App (formerly Tecarta Bible) also shows ads unless you pay $4.99 a year to remove them.
- Subscription only: Dwell ($59.99 a year after a 7-day trial) and Bible Studies for Women ($79.99 a year, no free trial).
Where your Bible notes are stored
Most Bible apps keep highlights and notes in an online account so they sync across devices. That is convenient, and it also means your writing sits on the developer's servers.
- Synced to an account: YouVersion, Bible Gateway, Logos and ESV Bible (synced with ESV.org). Olive Tree syncs across iPhone, iPad and Mac, and Blue Letter Bible backs notes up to the cloud.
- On your phone only: Bible Studies for Women keeps notes, highlights and reflections on the phone with no account, and exports everything as a plain text file. Cloud backup is off, so export or rely on your phone's own backup.
- No notes described: Hosanna and The Bible with Nicky and Pippa are for reading and listening.
Companion apps worth adding
[BibleProject](https://bibleproject.com/app/) is free, with short animated videos on every book of the Bible, a podcast and classes. It has no Bible text, so pair it with a reader above.
[Life Bible App](https://lifebible.com/features), formerly Tecarta Bible, suits readers who want study Bibles such as the Life Application Study Bible and a Bible Recap reading plan, with many titles sold separately.
If you mainly want guided studies rather than a Bible reader, see our guide to the best Bible study apps.

How we chose
We started from the apps that rank and appear in answers for "best Bible apps" today, then checked each one on the App Store, Google Play and its developer's site on September 29, 2026.
For every app we recorded its translations, price and trial terms, ad labels, offline reading and where notes are stored. Where a listing did not say, we wrote "Not stated" rather than guess.
We make Bible Studies for Women and placed it first for one reason: it is the pick here for understanding what you read, with explanation built into the app and notes kept on your phone. YouVersion is the better free Bible app, and we say so.
Frequently asked questions

Which Bible app is better, YouVersion or Bible Gateway?
For most people, YouVersion: it is free with no ads and has far more versions (3,500+ against 200+). Bible Gateway suits you if you already use its website and want its Plus study library.
What is the easiest Bible app to use?
A simple reader is easiest to start with: YouVersion, the ESV Bible app's reader mode, or Bible Studies for Women, whose Today screen shows the verse of the day and your next study session. Logos and Olive Tree have more tools and more to learn.
What are the top five Bible apps?
By use: YouVersion for free reading, Blue Letter Bible for word study, Olive Tree or Logos for a study library, Dwell for listening, and Bible Studies for Women for guided understanding.

What is the #1 study Bible?
There is no single #1. The ESV Study Bible is $47.99 in Olive Tree and comes with the ESV Bible app subscription, and the NIV Study Bible is $24.99 in the NIV Bible app.
