Members of the Word makes Bible Studies for Women, one of the apps in this guide. We checked every other app's price and features on its App Store listing, Google Play listing or official site on September 29, 2026. Prices are in US dollars and can vary by country.
Search for a Bible reading app and much of the page is audio: apps built for listening take several of the top places. If you want to read, the things that matter are different: can you make the text comfortable, can you read offline, can you follow a plan and see your progress, and does the app help you understand what you just read?
Most roundups skip those questions. They list features, but rarely say whether an app lets you change the type size, works without a signal, or explains anything at all.
So we compared seven text-first apps on exactly those four things. We checked every app on the App Store, Google Play and its developer's site on September 29, 2026.

1. Bible Studies for Women
Best for reading the Bible with understanding: a clean reader plus a guided study of the passage
Bible Studies for Women pairs a simple Bible reader with guided studies, so you can read a passage and then understand it. It earns first place here for that pairing, not for the number of translations or plans.
The reader holds the full Berean Standard Bible offline. You can set the type size, line spacing and reading theme, search by word, phrase or reference, and it opens where you left off.
When you want help with a passage, a study session walks you through it: The Breakdown explains it in plain words with context and translation notes, then The Spark asks a reflection question.
Studies take about 5, 10 or 20 minutes, and all three depths are routes through the same study.
- Best for
- reading the Bible with understanding: a clean reader plus a guided study of the passage
- Price
- $7.99 a month or $79.99 a year. No free trial

Worth knowing
- It carries one translation, the Berean Standard Bible. If you read the NIV, ESV or KJV, choose another app.
- There is no read-through-the-Bible plan: its twelve plans are guided studies of a book or theme. For a Bible-in-a-year plan, YouVersion or The Bible with Nicky and Pippa is better.
- It costs $7.99 a month or $79.99 a year, with no free trial, and there is no audio.
- We make this app, which is why we are clear about the price and the limits.

The Bible Recap is a reading plan, not an app
The Bible Recap is a chronological plan through the Bible with a short daily podcast from Tara-Leigh Cobble. It has no app of its own: its site points you to YouVersion, where the plan is free, or to Dwell.
Apps named "Bible Recap" in the App Store come from unrelated developers. To follow the plan, install YouVersion and search for The Bible Recap there.
What about audio Bible apps?
Dwell is an audio Bible app: the whole Bible narrated by 20+ voices, with text that scrolls along as you listen. It is a subscription, $9.99 a month or $59.99 a year on its site after a 7-day free trial, and it suits listening more than reading.
If you read the NIV, the official NIV Bible app from Biblica and Zondervan lets you download the NIV free for offline reading once you create an account.
How to choose a Bible reading app
Four questions settle it, and they are the columns in our table.
- Is it comfortable to read? Look for type size, line spacing and a dark or sepia theme if you read at night.
- Does it work offline? Some apps download every Bible, others only select versions.
- Can you follow a plan and see progress? YouVersion has the most plans; a study plan and a read-through plan are different things.
- Does it help you understand what you read? Some apps give you study notes to look up, others explain the passage for you. Our guide to apps to study the Bible goes deeper on this.

How we chose
We started from the apps that rank for "bible reading app" and "best bible reading apps" today, set the audio-first apps aside, and chose seven text-first readers that run on iPhone and Android.
We checked each app on the App Store, Google Play and its developer's site on September 29, 2026, and compared readability settings, offline reading, plans and progress, and help understanding the passage. Where a listing does not say, we write "not stated".
We make Bible Studies for Women and placed it first for one reason: it pairs a simple reader with a guided study that explains the passage. For free reading plans, translations or original languages, the other apps here do more.
